MePA code: ABX-AR25029-3

About this solution

Lab Objectives

For the vapour-compression refrigeration unit:

  • Understand the vapour-compression refrigeration cycle and all its operating phases (compression, condensation, expansion, evaporation).
  • Analyse the behaviour of the main components (compressor, condenser, expansion valve, evaporator).
  • Measure and interpret thermodynamic variables (pressure, temperature, flow rate) to calculate the efficiency and performance of the system.
  • Use computer-based instruments to record, monitor and evaluate operating parameters. For the air-conditioning unit:
  • Study the principles of air treatment: heating, cooling, humidification and dehumidification.
  • Measure the fundamental environmental parameters: temperature, relative humidity and air flow rate.
  • Analyse the operation of typical HVAC system components: fan, heating elements, boiler, compressor, condenser and sensors.
  • Explore the energy efficiency of air-conditioning systems by calculating the power of the thermal devices involved.

Educational Aims

  • Make the concepts of applied thermodynamics tangible, providing tools for the practical verification of refrigeration cycles and air-conditioning processes.
  • Support the technical and operational training of students on technical-industrial courses, particularly in Mechanics, Mechatronics and Energy.
  • Develop the ability to use measuring instruments and digital interface systems, in line with modern plant control and supervision technologies.
  • Promote autonomy in analysing experimental data and identifying solutions to optimise the efficiency of HVAC-R systems.

Conclusion

The two teaching units form a complete, coherent lab for tackling the main topics of refrigeration and air conditioning, which are fundamental in the energy and building services sectors. They offer students an immersive experience that combines theoretical understanding, instrumental skills and engineering analysis, fostering interdisciplinary learning focused on the professional skills required in the heating and cooling sector. This solution includes technological systems that promote inclusion and equal opportunities through innovative teaching methods. It is designed to encourage active, collaborative learning.
