About this solution
Lab Objectives
The lab is dedicated to learning about and experimenting with the LOGO! 8 compact programmable logic controller, with particular attention to programming in an Ethernet environment, modular integration, signal simulation and the control of low-voltage loads. The main objectives are to:
- Understand how LOGO! 8 modules and their expansions work (DM8 12/24R, KNX module, Ethernet communication module);
- Develop simple automation applications with digital and analogue control in a 24V DC environment;
- Simulate real input/output conditions using the 24V PLC board and simulation push buttons;
- Program and monitor PLC operation using LOGO! Soft Comfort software and the web interface;
- Integrate the system with Ethernet networks and bus protocols (e.g. KNX) for building automation or technical home automation activities.
Educational Aims
The teaching package is aimed at students in technical schools, vocational institutes and training centres for electricians, electronics technicians, designers and maintenance technicians. The main learning aims include: 1. Basic technical skills in automation
- Acquiring the fundamentals of compact PLCs, hard-wired versus programmable logic, logic gates, inputs/outputs, digital and analogue signals;
- Understanding the IPO (Input–Process–Output) model and its application in programmable circuits. 2. Developing design and operational skills
- Writing programs in FBD or LAD for simple applications (timing, counting, combined logic);
- Configuring industrial Ethernet networks and simulating small automated plants. 3. Hands-on experimentation and troubleshooting
- Direct interaction with physical components through photorealistic training panels and terminal blocks;
- Solving technical problems through testing, diagnostics and process visualisation with LOGO!Soft Comfort;
- Using experiment overlays and augmented reality to focus on specific functions without mechanical distractions. 4. Preparing for decentralised automation
- Introduction to distributed programming and the connection of modules via protocols such as KNX and AS-i;
- Developing awareness of safety, energy management, remote control and smart maintenance.
Conclusion
The LOGO! 8 lab is a solid, versatile starting point for introducing students to industrial and building automation, combining theory, practice and technology. Thanks to its modular structure, intuitive software, Ethernet support and the option of expansion with buses and interfaces, the package:
- Provides modern, accessible tools for learning the fundamental concepts of programmed control;
- Fosters understanding of real automatic processes, in both industrial and home automation settings;
- Prepares students to develop autonomous, scalable solutions compatible with modern communication standards. Training on LOGO! 8 is particularly suitable for consolidating key automation skills, tackling integrated projects and developing an engineering mindset applied to new technologies.
