Paper technologies

A technical lab for hand-making paper and for the physico-chemical analysis of fibrous materials. It includes sheet moulds, refiners, presses, maceration tanks, quality control instruments, pilot recycling plants and laboratory glassware. Designed to develop skills in the manufacture, recovery and characterisation of virgin and recycled papers.
MePA code: ABX-TECCAR25

About this solution

Objectives

1. Make paper by hand through every stage of the cycle

The lab is equipped with sheet moulds, pulp mixers, refiners, maceration tanks, vacuum tables, presses and drying systems. Students learn to make sheets from virgin or recycled cellulose, following the industrial stages on a teaching scale.

2. Carry out physico-chemical analyses on paper and cellulose

Dedicated instruments (analytical balances, pH meters, thickness gauges, dynamometers, gloss meters, Cobb testers) make it possible to test grammage, porosity, transparency, strength, absorbency and other key characteristics of fibrous materials.

3. Simulate paper recycling and fibre recovery processes

Demonstration plants are provided for shredding, de-inking, dispersion and sedimentation. Students can observe and reproduce waste paper recovery processes and compare the parameters of the recovered materials.

4. Develop safe operating skills

Each workstation is equipped with PPE (lab coats, gloves, goggles), a first aid kit, a fume hood, a safety shower and an eyewash station. Students learn to use the instruments correctly and to follow the rules for chemical and technological environments.

Learning Aims

1. Understand the structure and properties of paper

Activities encourage the analysis of paper materials through mechanical, optical and chemical tests, focusing on cellulose, lignin, pigments, additives and industrial quality parameters.

2. Acquire lab skills in the paper sector

Students work with laboratory instruments and follow measurement and characterisation protocols in line with industry standards, combining theory and practice across the paper supply chain.

3. Promote sustainability and material circularity

Pilot recycling plants make it possible to process waste paper, experiment with closed-loop production cycles and promote a responsible, environmentally aware approach to producing paper materials.

4. Work in groups and document technical and scientific activities

Through experiments, technical sheets and reports, students develop transferable skills in observation, measurement, data analysis and the writing of technical documentation in keeping with the scientific method.
