Informazioni sulla Soluzione

Lab objectives

The lab aims to:

  • Introduce students to high-performance industrial robotics using the ABB IRB 1100 robot, known for its precision, speed and compactness.
  • Develop practical skills in robot programming and in the integration of 2D vision systems, with the aim of building intelligent applications such as object recognition and handling.
  • Introduce students to modern automation, combining the use of the PROFINET fieldbus, digital I/O signals and virtual simulation tools.
  • Offer simulated and real lab experiences, focusing on vision-guided Pick&Place applications, to prepare students for real industrial settings.
  • Support teachers with up-to-date training materials, structured courses and work-based learning (PCTO) pathways that match the needs of the job market.

Learning aims

The lab provides complete, interdisciplinary technical training through:

  • Advanced industrial robotics: study of the structure, kinematics and dynamics of the IRB 1100 robot, with applications to high-precision, high-speed tasks.
  • Programming in the RAPID language: using the teach pendant to develop work cycles, motion commands, I/O management and logical interactions.
  • Integration with 2D vision: use of an industrial camera and integrated vision software for recognising and locating target objects and guiding the robot to them, using the vision demo kit and the camera mount.
  • Automation and digital signal management: understanding the interaction between the robot and its environment through the I/O board and the I/O simulation panel, with exercises on logic control and interfacing.
  • 3D design and simulation: use of RobotStudio software with a multi-user server licence to design virtual robot cells and verify operating logic offline.
  • Integrated teaching and PCTO: use of video lessons and basic and advanced robotics pathways to build effective teaching geared to the world of work and to the technical profiles required by Industry 4.0.

Conclusion

The IRB 1100 teaching lab, equipped with a 2D machine vision system and complete with simulation tools, is a technologically advanced training solution for developing skills in robotics, automation and smart manufacturing.

Its configuration – compact yet high-performing – allows students to experiment with the most current applications in the sector, such as intelligent Pick&Place and the integration of mechatronics, sensors and digital control.

Thanks to its modular approach, practical exercises and structured training for teachers and students, this lab offers a perfect platform for active learning and for guidance towards the careers of the future, fully in line with the principles of Industry 4.0 and technical and vocational education pathways.
