Lab objectives
The lab is designed to:
- Introduce students to the ABB IRB 1100 robot, particularly well suited to high-precision, high-speed tasks in small spaces.
- Develop skills in advanced industrial robotics using professional actuators (Zimmer gripper) and an integrated machine vision system.
- Bring mechanics, electronics and computing together in a single learning environment, focusing on smart vision-guided Pick&Place applications.
- Provide a complete and safe lab experience thanks to the protective box, which allows more flexible use in school settings too.
- Prepare students for smart automation by introducing real elements of digital interfacing, visual recognition and adaptive handling.
Educational aims
The lab pursues technical, scientific and work-oriented educational aims:
- Applied robotics and safety: getting familiar with the IRB 1100 robot inside a CE-certified box, learning correct procedures, safe movements and the working logic of robotised industry.
- Professional actuators: use of the Zimmer GEP2010IO-00-B parallel gripper, mounted on an adapter plate with a dedicated connector, for stable, repeatable gripping in simulated industrial automation contexts.
- Integrated machine vision: use of the 2D camera, the VILBOX backlit panel and the VIDEMO demo kit for locating, recognising and guiding the robot on the basis of objects or visual patterns.
- Control and interfacing: handling digital signals via a 4IN/4OUT synoptic panel to simulate real automated scenarios.
- Multidisciplinary design: integration of mechatronic components, sensors and software, with exercises linking robotics, automation, programming and sensor technology.
- Vocational training and guidance: promoting competence-based learning that supports access to ITS courses, work-based learning (PCTO) or higher technical training, thanks to a lab faithful to the logic and devices of Industry 4.0.
Conclusion
The lab equipped with an ABB IRB 1100-4/0.58 robot, protective box, two-jaw Zimmer gripper and integrated vision system is a high-level training platform, offering a complete, immersive and safe experience of modern industrial automation.
This configuration lets students explore real cases of flexible automation, simulating industrial applications with adaptive handling and visual recognition. At the same time, the lab supports teachers in designing advanced, certifiable and replicable learning pathways that meet professional standards.
In line with the principles of Industry 4.0, the lab promotes multidisciplinary teaching that integrates robotics, machine vision and human-machine interaction, effectively preparing students for the working environments of advanced automation.
