About this solution

Lab objectives

The lab aims to:

  • Introduce students and teachers to the practical use of industrial robotics through a latest-generation collaborative robot.
  • Provide theoretical and practical skills in programming, simulating and managing robotic systems.
  • Enable configuration, control and integration of the robot via an industrial fieldbus (PROFINET) and digital I/O boards.
  • Develop real Pick&Place applications, with automation-oriented programming and 3D simulation.
  • Prepare students for professional settings through structured work-based learning (PCTO) activities on basic and advanced robotics pathways.

Educational aims

The lab is designed to offer a complete learning experience, aimed at developing skills in the following areas:

  • Industrial robotics: learning the architecture, kinematics and control of 6-axis anthropomorphic robots.
  • ABB robot programming: using the teach pendant and the RAPID language, with a focus on motion commands, I/O handling and operating cycles.
  • Virtual simulation: using RobotStudio software (with a server licence for up to 100 workstations) for offline design and verification of robotic cells, even without direct access to the robot.
  • Industrial automation: simulating digital signals via an I/O panel, integrating with PLC systems over PROFINET, developing sequential logic.
  • Practical applications: building Pick&Place scenarios with a two-jaw electric gripper, analysing and optimising operating cycles in a safe environment.
  • Teacher training: specific video lessons and an in-person training course ensure the transfer of technical and teaching know-how.
  • Guidance and work-based learning (PCTO): the included pathways give students a practical overview of careers in robotics and automation, fostering competence-based learning.

Conclusion

This lab is a forward-looking technological and training solution, designed to bring schools closer to modern industrial robotics.

With the ABB IRB 1300 robot and its associated teaching suite (simulator, demo kit, fieldbus, I/O, PCTO, video lessons), students and teachers gain access to a complete, certified platform that develops transferable and specialist skills for Industry 4.0, automation and advanced mechatronics.
