About this solution

Lab objectives

The lab is designed to provide students and teachers with an advanced technology platform for:

  • Learning the fundamental principles of industrial robotics and applied machine vision.
  • Developing skills in programming, simulating and managing ABB robots using the RAPID language and virtual environments.
  • Understanding and using 2D vision systems, integrating the camera with the programming environment to carry out image-guided operations.
  • Simulating real industrial scenarios through the combined use of Pick&Place, digital I/O, the PROFINET fieldbus and vision.
  • Introducing students to the principles of Industry 4.0 and to the most current operating contexts in manufacturing.

Learning aims

The lab enables a complete, in-depth and multidisciplinary approach, with learning aims focused on developing the following skills:

  • Applied robotics: study of the structure, kinematics and operating modes of the IRB 1300 robot, with practical exercises on handling and production cycles.
  • RAPID programming: learning ABB’s proprietary language for managing complex tasks, I/O signals, loops and logical conditions.
  • 2D machine vision: configuring and using an industrial camera, with practical exercises on recognition, location and image-guided robot control.
  • Integrated automation: simulation and management of digital signals, use of the PROFINET bus for industrial connectivity, and interaction with external devices.
  • 3D design and simulation: use of RobotStudio software with a multi-user server licence to design, test and validate robot cells in a virtual environment.
  • Innovative teaching for teachers: training support through video lessons, teaching materials and an in-person course, to integrate robotics effectively into the school curriculum.
  • Work-based learning (PCTO) pathways: a modular structure of basic and advanced teaching content, suitable for school-work alternation activities and career guidance in the automation sector.

Conclusion

The lab with the ABB IRB 1300 robot and integrated 2D vision system is a high-level training solution that faithfully reproduces modern, innovative production environments.

The absence of an enclosure makes it suitable for versatile use in a technical classroom or school lab, while the integrated camera greatly expands the range of applications, making the system suitable for advanced vision-guided automation scenarios.

This equipment offers students an immersive, interdisciplinary experience in line with the needs of today’s industry, fostering the development of employable skills aligned with the paradigms of Industry 4.0, cognitive robotics and intelligent automation.

The lab is therefore a bridge between school and business, able to enhance the educational role of technology and guide new generations towards the careers of the future.
