Automation Lab – Installation Technology: residential electrical installations, wiring and testing

A hands-on course on domestic electrical installations: 7 progressive projects, wiring on panels, standardised CEI/VDE diagrams, 230V AC/24V DC, testing, fault sets and maintenance.
MePA code: ABX-TP2031

About this solution

Objectives

1. Design residential electrical installations

Students learn to identify standard electrical symbols, interpret wiring diagrams and understand the functional logic behind each installation. They acquire skills in planning installations in residential and school settings, assessing the layout of lighting points, sockets and control devices according to regulations and industry best practice.

2. Develop installation and wiring skills

Using practical boards, students physically make the connections between electrical devices (switches, relays, sockets, lamps) using safety leads and following precise diagrams. This activity develops manual dexterity, tidiness and respect for safety conditions during real electrical installation.

3. Interpret and build functional wiring diagrams

The course includes building and testing circuits such as the switch-off circuit, two-way switching, push-buttons and timers. Students learn how to turn functional requirements into wiring diagrams and how to implement them correctly, developing autonomy and the ability to adapt to the different configurations required.

4. Work safely with low-voltage systems

The use of training panels powered at 24 VDC allows students to work in complete safety, reducing the risks associated with high voltage. The practical activities make it possible to simulate real situations while ensuring a protected environment in which to experiment, correct and try again without danger.

Educational Aims

1. Gain mastery in building installations

Each teaching project leads step by step to the construction of complete circuits, developing the ability to analyse customer requirements, select the right components, organise the work and carry out a tidy, effective installation. The exercises reproduce real scenarios that prepare students for the professional context.

2. Diagnose faults and anomalies

The exercises include situations in which anomalies or malfunctions must be identified and corrected. The instructor’s manual provides realistic fault scenarios (e.g. faulty switch, short circuits, insulation problems), allowing students to learn how to take measurements, detect causes and apply the appropriate technical solutions.

3. Integrate technical knowledge with planning

The course develops operational and project management skills, from drawing up work orders to compiling materials lists and installation diagrams. This comprehensive approach links theory to practical application, improving precision, teamwork and independent work management.

4. Apply installation and documentation standards

By using symbols that comply with regulatory standards, drawing up detailed technical documentation and using certified measuring instruments, students acquire the skills needed to work in certified professional settings, as required by CEI and VDE standards. Illustrative material and software for producing documentation digitally are also provided.
