Informazioni sulla Soluzione

Lab objectives

The lab is designed to offer a practical, technology-rich learning experience, with the following objectives:

  • Introduce students to the ABB IRB 1100 industrial robot, a compact and fast machine ideal for high-precision applications in confined spaces.
  • Provide practical skills in robot programming, digital signal handling and the use of key automation tools.
  • Build familiarity with Industry 4.0 technologies through integration with the PROFINET fieldbus, the digital I/O board and virtual simulation.
  • Offer a safe hands-on experience thanks to the portable box, well suited to teaching activities in school settings.
  • Support teachers with up-to-date teaching tools (video lessons, work-based learning (PCTO) pathways, a training course), making it easier to integrate the lab into the school curriculum.

Educational aims

The lab helps achieve multidisciplinary learning goals through:

  • Precision industrial robotics: study of the kinematics, performance and safety of the IRB 1100 robot, designed for fast, precise operations in production environments.
  • Programming in RAPID: developing operating sequences, work cycles, motion control and I/O signal handling via the teach pendant and the OmniCore C30 controller.
  • 3D simulation with RobotStudio: virtual design and validation of robotic cells using ABB RobotStudio software, with a licence for 100 workstations.
  • Industrial automation and digital signals: use of the I/O board and the I/O simulation panel to understand the logic of data exchange between the robot and external devices.
  • Pick&Place applications: hands-on activities with an electric gripper and demo kit, to understand the workflow of real industrial applications.
  • Supported teaching and continuing training: access to video lessons and training modules for teachers, plus structured work-based learning (PCTO) pathways (basic and advanced) aligned with the profiles sought by employers.

Conclusion

The lab based on the ABB IRB 1100 with portable box is a modern, compact and certified training solution for an introduction to industrial robotics and automation.
Its configuration – without vision but equipped with complete tools for simulation, programming and signal handling – makes it ideal for safe, technically stimulating and easily replicable school activities.

Combining professional hardware, structured training and competence-based teaching, the lab offers students and teachers a learning environment suited to developing the core skills needed to meet the challenges of Industry 4.0,
preparing them for future careers in robotics, automation and advanced mechatronics.
